The Mona Lisa is one of the few works definitely attributed to Leonardo da Vinci. It originates from the beginning of the 16th century, but the exact time of creation is unknown.

Oil painting on poplar wood using a technique called "sfumato", a very subtle layering of colors that makes the painting stand out with imprecise outlines. The mysteriousness of the image is emphasized by the smile and look of the model of unknown identity, which subverts the customs of the time of its creation. These facts have made the work an icon with cult significance.
