Game description
Codenames was released in 2015 and instantly became the most popular party game on BoardGameGeek, according to the community (beating out Avalon, Time's Up and Dixit for the top spots). It is so simple that it can be played by all generations - we only recommend that you have at least four players at the table at the same time.
Game rules
25 cards with different words are placed on the table - part of the words will belong to one group, part of the words to the other, some will be neutral, and one card will be deadly, because its selection will mean the immediate end of the game and the defeat of the team that chooses it. Both groups then designate a player who will give clues in the form of associations. These two team leaders will be the only ones who know which word belongs to whom. Each time the group takes a turn, the leader will give the rest of the group a clue in the form of one word (which, of course, must not be the same as any word from the cards) and a number. The number will mean how many cards are associated with his clue, eg. "animals, 3!". The other players must now try to choose the correct cards. The game continues until one group manages to discover all the words that belong to it, or until one group mistakenly chooses a killer card.
For children and adults
Designed for both experienced and less experienced players, Codenames also excels as a family board game with children over the age of ten. In team bonding that will grow from move to move as you successfully guess what your team leader was thinking and what words they are right. It also feels pretty good when you manage to trick your opponents into calling your agent by mistake instead of theirs!
