Suggested activities (in class)

The different activities will give children the opportunity to practise naming different emotions and giving examples for each emotion.

How do you feel? In a small group, students roll dice with words and give examples of times when they felt this way. After the whole group has shared their examples, the pupils sit back in their desks and write a few sentences or a short sentence about it.

Stories with emotions : Each student rolls one word die and one picture die. The student writes what he thinks the picture and the word show. Then he/she writes a few sentences or a paragraph presenting examples where both emotions are present. For example, if a pupil rolled a die with a picture of a boy looking embarrassed and a die with the word confused, they might write that the boy was confused about the story and therefore embarrassed when asked to answer the question. Stories can be fictional or realistic. Allow students to write freely about emotions, without emphasis on grammar and punctuation.

Name the emotion:The pupil rolls a die with a picture. The pupil has to name the emotion that is depicted. Challenge the pupils to name three different emotions for the same expression.

Everyday emotions: The pupil rolls a picture die and a word die. For the picture die, students have to say what emotion the person has. The pupils have to answer the question: 'Why might a person feel this way?' Ask the same question for the word cube. Listen for different responses. Write the answers on the board under the correct heading so that they are all visible.
